Miles manages the day to day operations, acquisitions, and contract procurement for Longleaf. Originally from Greenville, NC, Miles was born and bred a Tarheel, and graduated with a dual degree from UNC-CH in Business Administration and Spanish in 2005. Since then, he’s grown to love everything North Carolina as a state has to offer.  His favorite course in college was BUSI 126, a class focused on real property.  Upon realizing that Durham would be the place to set roots, starting a company was a good next step.

Miles started Longleaf Building & Restoration Inc. in 2011 after several years of experience in residential real estate and construction.   He derives his passion of the building and real estate business from the precepts of always learning, growing, and improving, and being a steward of what we have been given each and every day. We believe it's important to study market trends in the craft of building homes so that what we build can impact lives for generations to come. Building communities where lives can be transformed with enriched interpersonal connection is a key tenant that keeps us engaged in the business.

Above all, his true joys are at home with his wife Catherine of 15 years, four boys, Jackson (12), Charlie (10), Stuart (8), and David (5).  They’ve learned together that houses become homes when space is created where life and community can happen. When not working, Miles gravitates towards anything that reminds him of God’s beauty and creation all around us, which includes reading and enjoying the outdoors through hunting, fishing, golfing, hiking, surfing, or just simply watching a nesting blue bird or a hawk do what they were created to do.

Kevin Smith, Project Manager

Kevin manages the day to day operations on each job site for Longleaf. Originally from Greenville, SC, Kevin has always veered towards adventure and pushing the limits. In college, he led adventure courses like sea kayaking, mountaineering, and white water rafting in British Columbia and in Brevard, NC. After college, Kevin spent 4 years in Nicaragua helping to build homes and foster relationships with his wife, Anna. Once that season came to a close, they decided to make Durham, NC home.

After arriving in Durham, Kevin’s grandfather eagerly connected him with Miles, and ever since they have been working together. Joining the team in late 2020, Kevin has played an integral part in helping Longleaf evolve as a company. HIs warm personality, eager optimism, and fluent Spanish make him a great partner in helping Longleaf create homes across the city of Durham and beyond. Kevin’s first project as lead site manager was the Corner of Trinity Park where Kevin helped create a compact small house pocket community in one of the urban historic neighborhoods in Durham.

Outside of work, you might see Kevin on his front porch, hanging out with his wife. They have a 1 year old son named Fisher, who is a true delight of a boy. Kevin is always looking for new ways to push his limits, while also finding rest with his family. Kevin and Anna love to try out new restaurants, go for runs or walks around town or the network of public trails available to us by Duke University and the State of North Carolina. They’ve also been known to shred the slopes. We are very pleased to have Kevin on the team as we strive to creatively build or develop new housing opportunities for our neighbors.

Kat Prentice, Designer and Operations Coordinator

Kat came to Longleaf with enthusiasm and grit. She is faithful, committed, and convicted as a person which makes her a great fit for her role. She is responsible for assisting Kevin and Miles with all the organizational dynamics of running a building and development business. She is gifted in design and loves to make a contribution towards creating a beautiful yet functional space within which to live and thrive. She is married to Jonathan and they have two children, Luke (8) and Mary Love (5).
